CODEX Third Biennial International Book Fair
Cathy and Derek are proud to be part of the CODEX International Book Exhibit held February 3-6, 2011 at the University of California at Berkeley. The Codex Foundation was founded to preserve and promote the art and craft of the book and every two years the Foundation hosts an International Book Fair. CODEX gathers together a congress of the world's finest private presses, book artists, artisans, curators, collectors, and scholars in the spirit of an Old West rendezvous. The depth and breadth of the work represented at the fair is archived in the Codex Publication Book Art Object.
The 2011 book fair will bring together over 140 artists from around the globe. Along with the strong representation of American presses and publishers, the Codex Foundation will feature book artists from France, Germany, Japan, England, Canada, Colombia, Italy, Australia, Russia, and Israel. The fair is acknowledged as the "world's fair" of the book as art and artifact. For more information, please check out www.codexfoundation.org.

Book Arts Course Cathy Taught in Florence, Italy
Cathy taught a workshop on artists' books in Florence, Italy with fellow book artist, Mary Laird. The workshop was part of Dan Welden's International Workshops. Cathy's workshop was called: THE BOOK AS ART: CREATING ARTIST BOOKS. Cathy's class emphasized the integration of image and text within the structure of "Artist Books." She ventured with her students beyond the Renaissance city, into the countryside to stir their imaginations and find and deepen their artistic voices to create multiple books. Their collaborative time together included: demonstrations, field trips, and lectures on contemporary as well as traditional artist books. They went to Venice to the Bieanle International Art Exhibit. Cathy and Mary are planning to teach future workshops both in the US and abroad.

A Virtual Gallery
Gallery DeForest, previously located in Ashland's Historic Railroad District, maintained a strong presence in the
Ashland art scene. Voted "Best New Gallery" in its first year of business, many have
sought out it's charm and beauty–making it a regular destination for both visitors
and locals alike. Representing both local and internationally reknowned artists,
Gallery DeForest has provided its clientele with a "visual sanctuary"–a space
resonant with beauty, and an atmosphere calm and reflective.
In November 2008, artist/owner Cathy DeForest transitioned from operating
a physical gallery into cultivating and maintaining a virtual one. She shifted
her focus to pursue her true passion– creating art. "I have had the pleasure of
representing many wonderful artists, and watching each body of work grow and
evolve. It has inspired me to listen to my own muse, and move into a deeper creative
space personally." Operating a virtual gallery will give Cathy the flexibility to
continue representing her current artists, while allowing her more time to develop
and create her own body of work.
